As this does not seem to be a sparc-specific problem, I'm cross-posting
this message to redhat-list and sparc-list, please bear with me. :P

I've put together an external SCSI2 CDRom to connect to one of my Sparc
machines (specifically an IPX). It's a Plextor PX32TSi, a 32X internal
tray reader. I put it in a case suitable for any SCSI2 device, with
centronics 50pin connectors on the back. It is terminated. If I boot the
redhat 6.1 install from floppy OR CDRom drive with this drive connected,
I get this:

running /sbin/loader (this is normal)
/tmp/raid1.o: a module named raid1 already exists (I think this is, too)
exec: permission denied (here's where the trouble starts.)
install exited abnormally
sending termination signals...done
sending kill signals...done
unmounting filesystems...
        /mnt/source
        /dev/pts
        /proc
you may safely reboot your system

At which point the system is halted. If I boot the floppy install
WITHOUT the drive connected, the install will start (though it still has
the lockup problem mentioned previously in several threads on
sparc-list.) If I put a hard drive in the external case, instead of the
CDRom, the install will again start and freeze as per the aforementioned
lockup problem. So, I think the CDRom itself is the cause of the
problem, but I have no idea what it is. I've tried the jumper settings
for 512/2048 byte blocks, disabling/enabling parity and termination, and
nothing seems to work. Anyone have any ideas, or ever seen this problem?

Matt
