last little trick : I think you want to use 16 bpp by default.
2 ways to do it :
>startx -- -bpp 16
or have it by default in you XF86Config . You look for :
Section "Screen"
Driver "svga"
Device "bla bla"
Monitor ....
and you add :
DefaultColorDepth 16
right after the Monitor line
et voila .
