good afternoon,

Does samba have a maximum character limit to what it will support for
username values?

I have a working samba installation on a rh6.1 box using the stock
samba 2.0.5a-12 rpm's off of the CD.

I'm serving up file folder shares off a linux box and making them
accessible to NT Domain users via Network Neighborhood.

Relevant (but not comprehensive) list of parameters:

global:

security=server
password server = myPDC
domain controller = myPDC
wins server = myWINSipaddress

share definitions:
[homes]
    comment = Home Directories
    browseable = no
    writable = yes

This works. Users can access their file folders via network neighboorhood,
drive mapping, and smbclient without difficulty with ONE exception:

users with usernames longer than 12 characters can't access their
folders. They can list accessible directories:

        server -->
                theirhomedir
                xfers

but when they click on theirhomedir, they get an error saying Network Path
Not Found.

Very curiously, they can still access their folders via smbclient.

Some troubleshooting steps:

1. if their usernames are shortened but their directory name stays >12
char, it works.

2. if the username stays >12 char and their directory name is shortened,
this doesn't work.

This limitation is true regardless of what the global protocol parameter
is set to. By default, it's set to:

protocol = NT1 (which should work anyway).

I've also tried LANMAN1 and LANMAN2.

Is this a limitation I'll just have to deal with or does anyone know
of a workaround or fix? (usermaps probably work but that'd be really
ugly).
