You left off the version of RedHat.  Also, have you applied the
errata updates?

The S3 virge chips seem to be a little touchy.  Some people say to use
the SVGA server and others say to use the S3V server.  Also, some S3V
chips seem to hang the machine if you probe the machine and then start
X.  Also, they may work in 24 bits per pixel but not 32 bits per pixel
or vice versa - can't remember which.

So things to try:
reboot and then startx
change the bits per pixel setting use Xconfigurator or XF86Setup or
hand edit the XF86Config file if you're comfortable with that.
