I have a java program running the IBM jre that scrolls through a list of
urls displays them and then starts all over again. The thing will run
for about 3.5 days and then choke. The javacore file provided by the
jre has this at the beginning whith a whole bootload of stuff:

SIGSEGV received at befff800 in /lib/libpthread.so.0. Processing

I am running 2.2.5-22 standard RH kernel from binary rpms. Someone in
the IBM java newsgroup suggested that I upgrade the kernel:

..................from IBM java NG post

I've heard tell that there are memory leaks in several of the 2.2.x
series
kernels.
You might try upgrading to 2.2.14-1.3.0 which resolves most of these
issues(I've been liking it at least)
That might explain your problem, but then again, I can't get Tux to work
with Mesa & Plib.

.................end from post

My questions are:

What the heck does libpthreads.so.0 do?

Is upgrading the kernel going to help?

Is there a newer glibc that will work with a machine that has been
upgraded from 5.0 to 5.2 to 6.0 and all the updates I could find?

Would starting over from scratch on this config with say, 6.1 help?
This is no trivial matter since there are a multitude of config tweaks I
have done over the past year or so on this machine but I suppose I can
wade into it if it will help.

Bugzilla has several mentions of glibc fixes but it didnot look like
they were related to my problem but I am certainly over my head in
really determining that.

Any help appreciated.
