I've checked the files between my laptop/pcmcia modem and my desktop/3COM External 
Modem.  Everything is the same.  Also checked the files recommended in
the responses below.
    - wvdial contains "noauth"
    - pap contains the appropriate client,server,secret
    - chap contains the appropriate client,server,secret

I even did a complete reinstall of the RH6.1.  I still get the same message in the PPP 
log:

    "The remote system is required to authenticate itself but I couldn't find any 
secret (password) which would
        let it use an IP address".

The peculiar thing is that it does make the connection - so I know the serial port is 
configured (also works in my Win98 configuration).

Still confused.
