Dear Mathias,
I use a 812c with Red Hat 6.1. I upgraded lpr from an RPM available
on the Red Hat errata page-
http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/rh61-errata-security.html- if you
do this you will avoid some problems. I configured my printer using the
Red Hat utility named "printtool" which you must invoke as root from an
xterm. Select "Add" and enter your parallel port the printer is attached
to - mine was /dev/lp0. Click on "Select" button by "Input Filter" and
you get the "Configure Filter" window. I selected "HP Desk Jet
550c/560c/6xxc Series" and select send EOF and select Fix Stair Stepping
Text. "OK" your way out and select tests on first window. It worked like
a champ for me on my 812C.
My observations:
I used as root "cat text.file > /dev/lp0" to determine what port my
printer was on. I thought it would be on lp1 but I was wrong.
The Linux Printing HOWTO http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/ and the
printer database will be of interest to you
http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi. The database has
the source for a specific driver for the 812c ...but.... to install the
driver you must recompile ghostscript...not a trivial task...edit make
files, etc. the instructions come with the source for the driver. I am
going to try it when I figure out what to do.
The best tutorial I found on the printer spooler daemon and the
/etc/printcap file was in the manual on http://www.freebsd.com -not the
man pages. My /etc/printcap file which is created by printtool shows the
path to the input filters "/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter" - this is a "magic
filter" file that determines what kind of file you are trying to print
and it invokes the the correct filter plug-in. It is interesting to look
at the filters in the directory /usr/lib/rhs/rhs-printfilters/ because
you can quickly see which file types you can print immediately.
My 812c works great with the above. I have not figured out the
available printer fonts yet - screen fonts yes. It seems to vary by
application. It is best to print out of application like GIMP for color
printing. If I invoke lpr with a file the last line of text will be cut
off because of the 812c prints the bottom margin of .46 in.
