Boy did I blow it on this one! The command I was thinking of was not
"xauth", but xhost. One my windows box the xserver does not require any
hosts file by default, but on linux you may have to use xhost to give
another machine access to the x-server.  Also, if you have used su within a
terminal to change users the server will not accept the connection for the
second user. There was a thread discussing this situation a while back but I
don't recall the solution. You could search the archives at on moongroup.
