I recently installed RH 6.1 on a similar machine:
2 x PIII/550, 512 MB ECC, AHA2940U2W, with a 9G U2 drive connected for OS
&& swap. AMI Megaraid 466 with 6 18G U2 drives in a RAID 5, split into
2 logical disks.
In order to get the install to work properly, I had to physically swap
cards. That is, literally, had to unplug the cards and have them trade
places, so the 2940U2W would be seen first, and thus would assign /dev/sda
to the drive on that card. Your "ordering" problem sounds like a PCI
"problem", not really a kernel problem, per se.

: after install, the kernel sees aic7xxx first, result is a kernel

: the install from the megaraid (at least disconnect all HDD-like
: devices), recompile kernel with megaraid compiled in and aic7xxx
: as module, then plugging in the HDD's on the aic7xxx. But there
: surely is a better way!
