I've got a Samba server at home. It is setup to use encrypted passwords;
kids' computers running Win95 and Win98 connect to it without the registry
patch.
I got a copy of Win2K yesterday. To have a look at it I installed it on my
laptop.
Using command prompt I can enter "use net f: \\samba_server", and it works
fine. In explorer I can type "\\samba_server" in the Address dialog box,
and it connects to the server no problem. I can also use explorer to map a
drive to the server.
Now, here's the problem; if I browse into "My Network Places" (this is the
new name for Network Neibourhood), I can see my Samba server, but when I
click on it I get "The remote procedure call failed and did not execute".
Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any clues of what's happening?

P.S: I've also noted that Using IE to connect to my ftp server (via
Squid), it tries (although tacitly) to tell me that I ought to use
"another proxy that supports" such and such. To some of us "older guys"
this seems a hell of a lot like DR-DOS and Windows 3.x ..... I can see
some managers asking their IT departments to "fix" the problem by
installing MS Proxy :-(
