Hi, Amber,

I have a couple of machines with a USR #5687 v.90 internal isa modem.
It works really well under a up kernel, but not an smp kernel. The key
is that I have an older version of this model which has user settable
jumpers for com and irq. I notice that the newer versions don't have
this feature. You can immediately tell whether a model #5687 is new or
old by the shape of the card. The old version is a rectangle, and the
newer version has a corner cut out so it looks like Utah. If you can
get one of the older versions, just set the jumpers to the proper com
and irq for your system, and it'll work well (as long as you're not
running an smp kernel, at least in my experience). If you have the
newer PnP version, did you see this recent posting:

There is a Pnp Howto out there, which I think is very helpful. I have an
ISA internal and I was able to get it work following that howto.

Basically, you need to choose "non plug and play OS" in the BIOS. Then
the
BIOS will configure the serial port for you, instead of leaving it to
the
OS. Then when you start redhat, try to use "setserial /dev/ttyS?" to
figure out whether the modem port is detected.

My internal ISA modem works both in Linux and Solaris 7.
