No, the MBR is generally the normal location for LILO.

Try adding the linear option to /etc/lilo.conf like so:

boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
linear
timeout=50

I don't know about RAID controllers, but I know 'linear' is necessary for 
some SCSI controllers.
