I do remember reading somewhere that there is an internal PCI modem with the
Lucent chipset that you can use with Linux. If you want, I can try to dig
up the details (I think in Linux Journal if you want to look yourself).

External modems should always be a safe bet - at least I've never heard
of an external Winmodem. I'm currently using an ELSA MicroLink 56k
Basic, which works fine. Before, I had a Creatix 28.8, which also worked
fine.
