I read in a O'reilly book a while back that you should never make a swap
partition over 120MB, why do they say that?

Not enough swap. I'd suggest more. I used to run 64meg on a 32 meg
system with 5.2, but I was often in trouble running gimp and netscape
together, esp if netscape was open for a while and eating memory. System
started crawling...

When I put mdk 6.1 on I went all out and put a 256 meg swap (still 32
meg RAM). So far I've only used up to 85 meg of the swap, so I'd suggest
at least 100 - 128 meg swap with a 32 meg system and 6.x ('course I'm
running KDE and netscape)

eg as I sit writing the mail with the normal sort of stuff I run, I
get...

[amosf@shiva amosf]$ free
             total used free shared buffers
cached
Mem: 30540 29796 744 22004 652
12532
-/+ buffers/cache: 16612 13928
Swap: 265032 65400 199632

And that's before I crank up SO or WP8 :-)
