Couple of possibilities... Why don't you give us the error message
you got and we might take a better guess. With the information you've
provided, the best I could give back is a WAG (Wild Ass Guess).

What distro are you running? RedHat does NOT default to 444
on any system I have loaded.
Do you have /home on a separate partition? You may have it mounted
wrong if you do.
