changing hostname?

I've changed my hostname by the hostname command, but on going into X I get
an error saying that this has not been added to my etc/hosts file.  My
question is do I just add the name or do I need a IP number as well, if I
do,  do I use any old number or how do I determine what it it is?  Sorry
this seems an idiotic question but I cannot find the answer on on web pages,
man pages or in my linux books. Ta. NH
