Here is a strange one.... Top used to work, until my system went flaky and I had to reboot. After rebooting, top still won't start. Actually, it starts, but in about a second it resets the screen and quits. No error messages, no nothing. I had also done: echo 8192 > /proc/sys/fs/file-max but, after reboot, "cat /proc/sys/fs/file-nr" reported 4096 in the right column. BTW, what are the first two numbers? The man page for proc doesn't say what the two values are (other than one is supposed to be the number of currently open files). Any pointers to top's failure will be appreciated. Thanks.
