I think you will find VMWare pretty much unusable with anything less
than 64MB to 128MB RAM. In fact, from the VMWare memory requirements:

Memory

- Enough memory to run the LinuxTM host operating system.
- Plus memory required for each guest operating system and applications.
- Minimum 96MB recommended.

The other factor against a laptop is that laptops tend to run slower
buses than do most desktop systems - along with slower hard drives. I
use VMWare to do my Windows NT Server development under Linux on two
systems. One is an overclocked Celeron 300A@450MHz w/ 128MB RAM and a
good IBM hard disc. The other system (I'm on it now) is a Winbook XL
laptop - K6-2/400 w/ 128MB RAM, and a Toshiba hard drive. The desktop
system definitely outperforms the laptop, mainly due to the better hard
drive I think....
