Hi ! Before I forget to mention what setup/system i have, i write it down here: RedHat 6.2 (Halloween V edition - if that matters, but i doubt) Kernel 2.2.11 (yea, not very up to date) 128 MB RAM P2-350 using KDE as Desktop updated the lpr today Here are a couple of questions that came up after installing RH 6.2 and fixing the printing bug (now printing works ok). In this conclusion i read somewhere that there is a printer driver out for the HP DeskJet 88xC/89xC family, right now i print with the dj550C driver which works, but the colours are pretty crappy printed. I guess i can find the driver somewhere out there in the net, but a) where do i have to store it / where are all the other drivers stored ? b) after storing it there, will it appear automatically under printtool ? c) if not, will it work if i just exchange the name dj550c to dj880c in the printcap file ? Oke, next question. Installation of programs is done by root, ok, but how can i allow my other user (dave) execute the new installed software ? What i normally do is: a) root installs a program (either rpm or with compiling) b) root creates a link on the KDE desktop / menu folder c) the program runs fine for root But after logging in as user dave and firing up kde i don't see the links ( which is logic !). What must i do to get the same menus and links for user dave as i have them for user root (except those apps for administrating the system). Does it work if i copy the desktop file from /root to /home/dave ? How can i give permission for user dave to execute the programs that root installed ? Basically how can i clone root to be dave without administration power for console (and KDE) ? Still fiddling with KDE i downloaded some apps (kmp3, kvirc, kicq). They got stored in /opt/kde, where the old KDE went to also (i have a RH 5.2 box with KDE 1.1, too). But now KDE 1.1.2 dissapears also in the /usr jungle and i have a pale thought that there was sth with a $kdedir thingie. May you give me advice how i can get KDE apps running that install to /opt/kde ? I bet there is a cheap and cheesy trick to it. Ok, i'm not done yet. I installed the apps either with rpm or with ./configure, (g)make, (g)make install. Installation went fine, but where are the apps now ? Is there a way to determine where they went if they can't be found in /usr/bin ?? Is there a way to influence where the app is stored ? Why are all apps thrashed into one directory ? That looks more like a windows behaviour .....installing all to C:\windows. Is there a reason for that ? Why aren't the apps stored in single directories together with their docs, howtos, scripts and config files ? I think that would make it just easier to find stuff, the search function is not that fast. Finally I got in trouble with one of my worst Linux nightmares. The libstdc++.so.2.9. Where do i get it ? In which rpm package is it ? Is it the same like the libstdc++.2.9 ? Will a link for libstdc++.so.2.9 to libstdc++.2.9 do the trick ? Why is it so hard to have only one name for one thing ? Besides that - why is it always a nightmare to get software installed under Linux. To me that is far more complicated than fixing a messed up config file. RPM at least shows where stuff goes. Oke, oke, that's enough for today. If you can find an answer to my questions i will include your name in my motd file ;).
