What kernel are you running Ed? I went through this myself, mkraid will
fail if you don't have the raid patches applied to the kernel in exactly
the manner you describe....

Redhat's kernels and sources have these patches, if you grabbed a fresh
kernel you'll need to apply the raid patches.

BTW, read the message when you run mkraid --force...
