Telnet Hanging

I've upgraded to RH6.1 --- telnet now just hangs --

I can get the following response

Red Hat Linux release 6.1 (Cartman)
Kernel 2.2.12-20 on an i686

but no log in prompt.

What do I need to do to get this working?

I can ftp to the server and the httpd server works fine -- the problem seems only
to be with telnet.
