Thanks for all your help on this one. I have got the card working but not w/o futher issues. There were two problems. One I had not plugged the sound card into my speakers via the right jack. Second, looking at the linux soundcard compatability pages I found some guidence. These pages suggested not trying the SB compatable cards but trying either MAD16 or windows sound drivers. The windooze ones work (the last on the list of possible suggestions). So cat anyoldaufile.ua >/dev/audio works However, I cannot get no system sound in gnome and cannot play a cd (at least not through the speakers) if I plug phones into the front of the CDrom I can hear the music thought the quaility ain't great. Any suggestions? Do I need a symbolic link between dev/audio and dev/cdrom or is it a hardware problem when I originally bought the card the sound came via a lead that connected the soundcard to the CDROM. On my new system the socket changed size on the new CDROM so I could no longer plug the sound card into it. Despite that I could get the CDs to play in windooze for a while then they mysteroiusly stopped playing. This makes me think it is not a hardware problem. ---------- >From: "Thomas Ribbrock \(Design/DEG\)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: Re: I cannot get no sound blues-yeah! >Date: Tue, Jan 11, 2000, 8:55 am > >On Tue, Jan 11, 2000 at 08:32:25AM +0800, Edward Dekkers wrote: >[...] >> problem is, even when you install the card in Winblows 9x, it actually loads >> a DOS program first that goes through and depending on what you told it when >> you installed, throws the card into either Windows Sound System OR Sound >> Blaster Pro mode. >[...] > >There might be a solution - I had similar problems with Red Hat 4.2 and >my OPTi 931 sound card (works since RHL 5.2).
