You need to add 

 alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

to /etc/conf.modules and then run

 modprobe lp

You should also do all the 'updates' which fix various problems.

 ftp://ftp.redhat.com/redhat/updates/6.1/i386/
 ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/updates/6.1/i386/ (mirror)

Anything listed in these directories that you have installed versions
of, should be upgraded.
