Hey Derek,
I'm pretty much a newbie too, don't worry. There are several ways the
way I'll recomend is to run setup in either /usr/sbin/ or /usr/bin/ I
forget which. You must be in root. type setup. Select "XFree68 setup" and
do how you did when first installing Red Hat except at the end when it asks
if you want it to start automatically select yes. I think that'll work for
right now you can even set up how fancy and stuff you want the login screen
to be but that's pretty complicated so lets take things one step at a time.

p.s. I can't check exactly because I have a winmodem so all internet stuff
is in windows. That stuff up there is for RH 6.0 I know 6.1's installation
is different than 6.0's hopefully the files are in the same places. Good
