After some digging into /etc/rc, I found that the rc system expects the
subsystems which start up and need to be stopped (the ones which will have
K??* files linked to them) to touch a file in /var/lock/subsys. I changed my
/etc/rc.d/init.d/endurance script to touch that file on startup and remove it
on shutdown. I think that will do the trick.

I'm expecting a new CPU cooling fan in the next couple days, that should give
me a change to check it out.

Thanks for all those who send helpful mail!

No, my friend, the way to have good and safe government, is not to trust it
all to one, but to divide it among the many, distributing to every one exactly
the functions he is competent to. It is by dividing and subdividing these
republics from the national one down through all its subordinations, until it
ends in the administration of every man's farm by himself; by placing under
every one what his own eye may superintend, that all will be done for the
best.
