Thought I would post the solution I found to the
following zip drive problem in case someone
else needs it.

Following a suggestion from L J Bayuk I tried
modprobe ide-floppy
It now takes the echo max_kb_per request:32 > /proc/ide/hdb/settings
and the zip drive works no I/O errors I think I'll just add
the modprobe ide_floppy to rc.local before the echo, unless
there is a reason I shouldn't
