Funny this is basically what I have done, and the cyrix box has been
running all night (with some softwre runnign that is supposedto put a load
on it) ! 

I left the case cover off. I moved the cdrom to a bay that allowed more
air flow between the power supply and the rest of the case (only fan in
the box before) and added a slot fan. It's one of those blue things with
two tubes with fans on the end, one blowing and one sucking, which are
aimed at that heat sink.

So if it keeps this up all day, I'll try with the case closed. I do
realize now that moving this box to a different location in the room has
also reduced the air circulation around it, which could be compounding the
heat problem.

BTW Greg, when I said below the CPU I meant next to the cpu on the
motherboard, which when mounted in the case leaves it "below" the cpu :)

Also, on the AMD side, I have pinpointed one of the DIMMs as having a
problem (as detected my memtest86). So things are looking good on that
front too :)
