Run "switchdesk". I think it's also included somewhere in the Gnome menu
(but I don't know for sure - my favorite "window manager" is the good old
text console ;) ).

No. It really doesn't matter which (if any) of them you use. You can run
GNOME applications within KDE and vice versa, so it's really just a matter
of picking the interface you prefer.
