I think you want a caching DNS, if that.  For a mixed environment, DNS is
nice.  For a small Unix/Linux network, you could easily get by with
/etc/hosts.  I think the IP Masq HOWTO (IIRC) has detailed configuration
information on caching-only DNS that might discuss things a little more in
your context.
