Since Redhat ships pre-built kernels, they must use a .config file for
them. For a given kernel on a distribution, how can one obtain the
kernel config file that generated that kernel?

For example, say I wanted to make one small change to the currently
running kernel, how could I get the config file that generated my
currently running (from a new distribution or update) kernel, make the
one little tweak and rebuild it and its modules.

Or, say for Alpha, where I'm running a 5.2 distribution. The
distribution came with a 2.0.35 kernel. There are 2 update .rpm files
for the 2.0.36 kernel: one for kernel-headers and one for kernel-source,
but no kernel distribution update. So, I want to build a 2.0.36 kernel
for my Alpha, but there is no /usr/src/linux/.config file with which to
build the kernel. So, I end up rebuilding it from scratch, maybe many
times in an effort to get an equivalent kernel to the original
distribution.

Thanks!
