I read some docs at the mesa website and now
see that the trick may be to either create 
symlinks from /usr/lib/libGL, etc to 
/usr/lib/libMesaGL, etc - hopefully allowing
for apps that require libMesa to still work
with Mesa-3.1.  The alternative for 3dpm, at
least, is to alter the makefile to call
libGL instead of libMesaGL.  Since Mesa-3.1Beta
libMesa has been replaced by libGL.
