Thanks for the tips but I have read the Linux Kernel book.  It doesn't
change the fact that Gnome thrashes my system if I do much with it.  I
know there's a lot more going on that in an equivalent Windows set-up
but I think my machine has a reasonable spec and resent the bloat that
slows it to a crawl.  Back in WindowMaker and everything is light and
airy.
