Well, you are exactly right Miroslav.  After I turned on
the screensaver from the control center, "Lock screen"
worked fine.

Is xscreensaver really the best choice for the screen 
locking program?  I don't think one should be required
to run a screensaver in order to lock her terminal.  Not
to mention how time consuming and difficult this problem
was to diagnose.  Sheesh.
