Either your modem is operating in HALF duplex mode, or it is echoing back
all characters sent to it... (Local Echo).
You'll need to change it's configuration via switches, or ATxx commands. If
you use the latter, remembet to make the changes "permanant" by writing them
out to NVRAM... using the appropriate command (AT&W for USRobotic Modems,
etc...).
