Hi!

It sounds like you're loading into runlevel 5. Runlevel 5 uses XDM as
opposed to the command prompt to verify the user. Try, as root, to edit
the /etc/inittab file. Change the default run level from 5 to
3...there's annotations in the file to verify I'm not telling you to
destroy your system :-)
