I am having a bit of trouble getting a Synaptic touchpad to work correctly, it jumps around a bit and eventually causes X to crash. I am running RH 6.1 on a Compaq Presario 1685. I have manually applied the fix supplied from the Linux laptops page described for a 1690 model. I am 99% sure this model has the same type of touchpad as my 1685. So, my problem is after editing the source for pc_keyb.c in /usr/src/linux/drivers/char, and recompiling the kernel, I am not sure that this new file was used in the compile because the problem continues. I am using make xconfig after editing the source file, and didn't see the need to change any of the module parameters except for the processor type, which I changed from i386 to a K6/PentiumII. I am rebuilding the kernel with 'make dep clean bzlilo modules modules_install'. I suspect that my changed source file isn't even being used in the recompile, or else this patch doesn't work for my device. If I am doing anything wrong on the kernel recompile, please advise as I am just a beginning programming student.
