Do you have the tarball or the compiled rpm?

For gzipped tarballs (tar.gz and tgz), in general:

tar zxvf <filename here>

cd <directory created>

look for the readme file. It is the first place to start when playing 
with new software. There are usually compilation and installation 
instructions included with most source distributions.
