Oh, man, that was an easy solution. Just in case anyone else might have this
type of problem, I'll tell what fixed it for me.

I had also noticed that printtool wasn't working, so I moved my hand-modified
/etc/printcap file into printcap.old and ran printtool. I had manually used
the uniprint driver from ghostscript and worked it into the print sceme.

With no printcap, printtool made a new one and I reconfigured with printtool.

On a hunch, I tried printing again, and it worked just fine!

IIRC, it wasn't my hand modifications that caused the problem, but the Epson
Stylus Color filter comment put into the /etc/printcap file by the printtool
from RHL5.2.

Anyone having trouble with their lpr and/or printtool might want to try
starting with no /etc/printcap file and let printtool make a new one. Can't
hurt to try.

No, my friend, the way to have good and safe government, is not to trust it
all to one, but to divide it among the many, distributing to every one exactly
the functions he is competent to. It is by dividing and subdividing these
republics from the national one down through all its subordinations, until it
ends in the administration of every man's farm by himself; by placing under
every one what his own eye may superintend, that all will be done for the
best.
