Are you sure that ADSL is the right alternative here? It's fine for people
doing Web surfing and downloading stuff, but the upstream pipe is a lot
narrower than the downstream one, so I don't know how good it is for serving
stuff. You might be better off with a lower-bandwidth dedicated connection.
Also, you need to check with your ISP/Telco as to what kind of bandwidth you
get from the exchange/central office onwards. I've got a 8Mbps/640Kbps
(5.7Mbps/704Kbps in reality) ADSL connection, but the telco here has 2Mbps
interconnection pipes, and that bandwidth is shared between all ADSL
users...
You should also check the ADSL connection for latency. Although mega-bits
per second sounds impressive, it's low latency that you really want. Web
surfing means lots of connect requests with small amounts of data coming in
and out, so low latency means you'll get a "snappier" surfing experience
even with a comparatively narrow 'Net pipe. Low latency is also important
for applications such as ssh and telnet.
My ISP routes a fair bit of traffic over satellite, unfortunately... I see
400ms+ roundtrips at times.
Otherwise, check out www.dslreports.com. Lots of links there.
Cheers,
