have you lpd started ? /etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd start ?
maybe lpr -Plp file helps ?
for example, my /etc/printcap benerated witch printtool looks like:
lp:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:\
:af=/var/spool/lpd/lp/acct:\
:lp=/dev/null:
but i am using networked printer ;)))
