.>P.S. For Linda and Paul: If you don't use PostScript files, what do you
print
>on you Linux box?
.
Actually I have used hp plotter graphics to draw our letterhead it is in a
file then
to print invoices, proposals, work orders ect the my programs copy the
letterhead
to a tmp file and generate the escape sequences for spacing, bold, duplex,
whatever.
it works great, I also have a backup letterhead which is just texts and
fonts that will
run on all the hp printers and a file the program checks to see what printer
is in use.
This way if the IIIsi printer is out of service we can still print with any
of our cheaper
but slower printers. The escape sequences are uniform across all hp printers
and
they simple ignore commands they cannot execute for example duplex. It is
one
of the reasons I buy hp printers. I used to have an epson at home where I
program
so I had options for it as well and when I replaced it I had to recomplile
everything
with new escape sequences since they changed from one model to the next. If
you
write your own programs it is a great way to create your own forms ect using
console
apps. We currently are replacing our unix system with Linux. We have used
the same
hardware for 8 years and have only had to replace the fan and a floppy
drive. We run
recieved on accounts, invoice, inventory, load lists, work orders, proposals
ect all from
programs I wrote and maintain. You can fix problems in hours and it all runs
on 1 meg
of ram and a 75 meg hard drive. However I will say I just put the first half
of the new
programs on a pc runing linux with 32 meg of ram and I have one really happy
office
they can now run the recieved on account books in about 5 seconds, although
it takes
a bit longer to print. This is over about 5 min on the old machine, or 1 1/2
hours by hand
aren't computers woderful.
