Evening Everyone:

I am running Red Hat 6.1 and apply all of the patches posted by Red Hat as
they come out. The other day I downloaded the latest initscripts and
sysklogd updates and applied them. Today, when I sat at the computer, I
noticed my net connection appeared to not be working. When I did an
ifconfig, it showed I had an IP Address. But when I tried to traceroute,
ping, telnet, open pine, etc., they all just hung and did nothing.

I have a cable modem, and it has worked flawlessly with Linux. My
provider uses DHCP, so I just about all of my info through pump. The only
thing I could remember changing was adding those two packages in. I also
thought that maybe there was a problem with Ethernet card, or something up
with my provider. After contacting my ISP, they confirmed they were not
having any problems. Also, my card worked in another machine I put it
into. Further, I thought something may have gone whacky, and not knowing
everything to check, I did a shutdown -r and rebooted. It took almost 15
minutes for the machine to come back up, and stalled on things like system
logger, sendmail, and a few others.

The last thing I did was force install the two older versions of the
initscripts and sysklogd rpms off of the 6.1 CD. After rebooting, voila -
my machine was back to normal. Anyone else notice problems with the
sysklogd or initscripts posted by Red Hat on their updates site?

- Mike
