I use XCDRoast, which is a frontend for mkisofs and cdrecord, most of
the time. It works well, and isn't difficult to figure out how to
operate.
Under Red Hat, you can give ownership of devices to users that log in on
the console. By default, that includes local tty's and X sessions. By
editing /etc/security/console.perms, you can set what devices are given
to users and what permissions are set. Documentation is internal to the
file. I find it easiest to add the CD-RW to the already defined <cdrom>
class. You should see what I mean when you look at the file.
