Well, a sort of summary. Many thanks to those who replied. I found running
the system at run level 2 or 3 had no problems with ksh. So the problem was
with logging in when running X window (KDE) by default. As far as I could
determine with RH5.2 the file /etc/X11/kdm/Xsession took care of running the
'.profile' file if it existed in the users home directory. Under RH6.1 both
gnome and KDE run /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession. This file has no such check of the
.profile file. I have included it as a simple if statement and it all now
works well.
