Just found a really helpful doc on Red Hat's site, "Red Hat Linux 6.1 Gotchas and Workarounds", dated November 11, 1999 (my apologies if this has already been posted). The url is http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/docs/gotchas/6.1/gotchas-6.1.html This doc fixed my problem with no sound in KDE. Turns out there are two answers: a upgrade to the newest KDE packages or, (my choice) making a symlink: ln -s /etc/sysconfig/soundcard /etc/sysconfig/sound. This worked just fine.
