First, if you want security, you really need a seperate piece of
hardware on which to run your firewall placed between you and the
net. The installed OS should be as minimal as possible.
If you want an easy fix you might consider one of the new gateway
appliances from NetGear & Zylex (sp?). They're about $240 on price
watch and are a box just a little larger than a PCX1000 CM with two
10baseT ports (one has a 10/100 port) and a serial port. They fit
between the CM and the hub/switch for the network (or your box).
They do NAT/firewall/port forwarding/dhcpcd/dhcp and support RR &
@HOME logins. Once you set them up, they
re admin'd with a browser. T
There are also some units that support PPP, but I don't know much
about them. They function as a seperate firewall device and allow
you to run anything you want on your box without having to worry
about it.
If you happen to have an old 386/40 or better with 16M of ram or
more (no hard drive, video or keyboard needed), you might want to
look at the Linux Router Project. It works very well and has all
the necessary stuff ipmasq/portsentry/dhcpcd/rrlogin. Admin is by
telnet.
