Hi Ryan, I was reading about your delima with tweeking. there is another
configuration tool in LINUX at the root and I think you type "SuperConfig"
or "SuperX" or something like that? I am sorry that I am not much help with
that. But ask around about that configurator. I kills! It will tell Linux
to install exactly what you have for a monitor as long as you know the
Horizontal and Veritcal rate (I think that is what it is called?) Boy I
better get these terms down. Anyway, I have tons of experience with getting
monitors and video cards to work. Some just will not work. As for your
card, if it is part of the S3virge cards which maybe the SiS is (I don't
know?) you won't have a problem. Just go back to XConfigurator (type that
exactly at the root before you go into Xwindows) and do not use the probed
value of your video card and select a "Generic Multisync" monitor for your
monitor. Select under the 16bit selections the 640x480 800x 600 and the
1024 by ? whatever that other number is. Reboot and when you start "startx"
at the root, if you can not see your monitor, press the Ctrl Alt and "+" or
"-" signs at the same time. That will select the graphic size of your
screen.
Good luck.

Ok, that did work. Now the tweeking I think I need help with. Windows said
that my video is SiS 5597/5598 and linux probe said it is a SiS 5598. And
the monitor is Gateway Vivitron 15. But when it tries to install the x
interface, it errors out and then not work. I have a Intel Pentium MMX 200
(wanting to upgrade to AMD K6II 300 shortly) and a generic mouse on serial
1, 2 button (which is not working within linux neither). I have had 5.1 on
this system before, but never got the NIC working neither (Wake On LAN
10/100 Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter, IRQ 9 but the range in windows for
memory is FFADE000 - FFADEFFF) 2 hard drives, 2926MB and 1040MB, wanting
to partiton as follows.
Hda1 - /boot -16MB
Hda? - swap - 64MB
Hda? - /usr - 512+MB
Hda? - /home - 512+MB
Hda? - / - 256MB
Hdb1 - /dos or /windows, which ever WINE needs, whole smaller HDD
I have 44MB ram, EDO
Anything else ya need to know?

Try typing "text" at the LILO prompt and use the text version of the
installer, bet you have a SIS based chipset vidoe (like a SpeedStar
A50), and does not work right without some XConfiguration tweaking.
HTH,
Later..
