Hello all,
Short: My NIS client kills the ypserv process at
the server as soon as X is being used. What's happening?
Long: I have a RedHat server (RedHat 6.1), offering
DNS, NIS, NFS and some other services. The server itself is also a NIS client. I
can use this server just as I want to, allowing NIS users to log on to the box
in both textmode and X graphical mode. Default run level is 5.
I also have a workstation running RedHat 6.1, that
is only a NIS client. When I log in to that box as "root", everything is
allright and I can startup X. But when I use a NIS user account, the trouble
begins. Using run-level 3, I can login, but when I start X (startx) the ypserv
process on the server gets killed and I get all kinds of mysterious RPC errors
on my client. When I use run-level 5, I can't log in as NIS user, as the login
process again kills the ypserv process on the server and again all kinds of RPC
errors occur.
I know that it's a little outrageous to use NIS on
such a small network, but on the other hand my 10 years experience with NIS asks
me to do this on my home network too....
The RedHat installations are real out-of-the-box
installations with no updates for any rpm from the 6.1 cd. Does anybody have any
suggestions, except for not using NIS at all?
Thanks in advance,
Alex Bron
