In /etc/inittab look for this:

# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
#   0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#   1 - Single user mode

#   4 - unused
#   5 - X11

    change the 5 to a 3 and then... in an xterm type "telinit 3" without the
quotes.

Once you're in init 3 you type "startx" to enter X and use the menus to quit X
to exit. If X ever hangs use Control-Alt-Backspace to exit.
