Gee, I actually purchased a Umax scanner specifically because it *was*
supported by SANE. I run xsane as a graphical interface, and it works
*marvelously* to scan images. However, the Umax parallel scanners are
*not* supported by Sane. I think this probably mostly due to the parallel
port protocal in the kernel before the most rescent ones - the new
parport_pc kernel module *should* allow one to access parallel port
scanners (at least, that's what the parport_pc docs say!). There might
not be drivers written to take advantage of this yet, but it's only a
matter of time.
I *did* buy myself a scsi scanner because parallel support for anything
other than printers was always iffy until more recently. Also, USB
scanners aren't going to work until the next stable kernel version (2.4).
But not *all* Umax scanners don't work. The SANE webpage has over 30 Umax
scanners listed, and all of their more recent scanners work fine.
For the sane scanner list, check:

Ta!
Mur!
